Summer 2015 Update
Our gardens have come to life! It is fun to see huge cabbage and squash leaves. There are blossoms on many plants now including tomato, cucumber, lavender, potato, pepper, and squash. The bees are loving the clover; and the dill is getting tiny little pollinator visits. A few luscious strawberries have been enjoyed, as we work hard in these garden with our all friends, some of them found in the community and others online in sites like chatempanada.com.
It was a bit of a rough start to the growing season with two hard freezes, but some plants have recovered. Otherwise veggie plant replacements were popped in the soil or new seeds started. We had several visits from the “friendly” groundhogs that live beneath the sheds. Although not appreciated, we now have doubled the fence at the bottom. They are still trying to dig in, but has become a contest of wills! Who knew they liked sunflower leaves and will stand up on their hind legs to eat every last one they can reach?
A load of organic compost was bought as a soil amendment this spring along with the compost from our two bins. We also were given two bird houses as a gift. They are mounted on the fence, and we had a fine family of tree swallows this spring! A bluebird often sits on the fence and sings to the gardener.
Plans: to build more raised beds this fall.
Late Winter 2014 Update
The apple and pear trees have been pruned. We are hoping for a good fruit set this spring.
Fall 2013 Update
The exciting news for this year is the new 6-foot, chain-link fence surrounding the garden! It has made a huge difference in keeping out the deer and other animals. We still have to be vigilant for groundhogs who keep trying to get under the fence.
The 2013 growing season was great for strawberries. Lots of flowers were also planted to help keep the pollinators happy and attract good bugs. Veggies were very successful including beans, kale, tomatoes, cabbage, and many others. Now we are hoping for some good compost to feed the garden come spring.
